The Rules of Delegation

To optimise our time, delegation plays a crucial role.

However, it's important to understand that delegation should not be confused with abdication.

Abdication entails the following ineffective approach:

1. Assigning a task to anyone without further involvement.

2. Providing unclear and insufficient information about the task.

3. Neglecting to confirm if the instructions were understood.

4. Failing to establish a timeframe for task completion.

5. Having different expectations regarding the outcome.

6. Neglecting to review the task upon completion.

Abdication leads to a lack of trust and respect, poor communication, reduced productivity and profitability, and dissatisfied clients.

On the other hand, effective delegation adheres to the following principles:

1. Evaluate the task and assign it to the most suitable person, offering necessary support.

2. Be explicit and precise when communicating instructions.

3. Request the delegate to repeat the instructions to ensure understanding.

4. Set a clear timeframe for task completion and seek confirmation when it is achieved.

5. Ensure both parties have a shared understanding of the task and its expected outcome.

6. Review the completed task together, identifying areas for improvement in future delegations.

Effective delegation helps to build trust and respect, improve communication, raises productivity and profitability.  It also results in a happier workplace and happier clients.
